Career Change & The general Misconceptions — Tech Edition.

There are some general misconception about tech that makes it difficult for people switching from another career into tech or taking a leap of faith to start a career in tech.

I will try to debunk some of those myths:

1. You need an advanced degree in Computer Science to Get a job in tech:

If you wish to have a skill, which can be self taught or you can learn through online classes like Reactng.com , there are short courses that can help you start off and identify the best path for your new journey into the tech world Very few employers care about you having a computer science degree anyway.

2. I really have to be good at maths:

Even though a knowledge of maths will be useful in some areas of tech like Data analytics, coding, there are other areas where maths skills are less important.

Design, Digital Marketing and Motion graphics and Animation are good examples of areas in tech that need little or no math/science skills.

3. You Can’t Use All the Experience and Skills You Already Have:

In your past work experience have you learned how to communicate with your co-workers or customers? How to be organised? How to solve problems? How to meet deadlines? How to come up with creative solutions? How to work on a team? Or supervise a team?

If you’ve done any or all of the above in a past, then you have skills that will carry over into and switch seamlessly to tech!

4. I will have to end up learning coding:

That’s not true. Yes, coding is a quite popular skill in tech.But a career in tech doesn’t always mean coding. It could be:product design, UI/UX design, project management, product management or even software testing.

5. It’s too late for me to go into tech:

There are lots of people in tech who are still in their 20s. But there are also tons in their 30s and 40s, and a pretty fair amount who are in their 50s and 60s and beyond.

Tech is not just for young people. You can start now. You can end up picking an area of tech that interests you and requires little to no coding.
